The Great Pie 'n' Mash debate.
Hello all,
That's the problem with going on to websites when you've had a few beers!!!
I either buy something useless/expensive or make some ill-judged remark.
Apologies to all. Joyce's or the 'little' P&M shop as us kids would call it when we were growing up in late 60's early 70's in Grange Rd/Walk area. We use to go to both P&M shops. Was there any difference in the prices?? There are two P&M shops in Eltham where I live. Of course it is not the same has your own favourite shop, but I must say it does fill the gap. Armant's mini pies look lovely!!
I may order 12 for my dinner.....Oh yeah, I forgot....I'm trying lose an inch or two off my 'Darby'!!
Phil (Bermondsey Beat)
Sheila,,SHEILA!!! CALM DOWN, they do pie and mash in many places in Kent, Bexleyheath, Woolwich, even in Deal, near Dover, and yes before you ask they are londoners who run the pie shops, they may not all be 100 p. c "Bermondsey written right thru" but it is good and you can park!! o.k so this thread is tongue-in-cheek, but the above is true, by the way i was born in the bosum of Bermondsey. and very pleased that i was, pie and mash aside...cheers liquor an" all.
HELLO BERMONDSEYBEAT, P&M DEBATE.
THINK WHAT YOU SAY, THEN SAY WHAT YOU THINK!. IT'S CALLED DEMOCRACY, JUST DON'T
TELL YOUR WIFE THAT "YOUR BUM LOOKS BIG IN THAT", THATS CALLED SUICIDE....,ANYWAY NO HARM DONE, IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THE THE DEPTH OF FEELING WE HAVE ABOUT
OUR TOWN, THIS PLACE OF UNTOLD MEMORIES THAT BERMONDSEYBOY HAS AWOKEN IN US ALL, NONE OF US SHOULD GET UPSET BY WELL INTENDED THREADS, SO LONG AS THEY
COME FROM A BERMONDSEY BOY/GIRL.
HAVE A JOLLY NICE EVENING ,WHAT!!!
Thanks Petefred2,
I know what you mean! but women do say mad things I was out with my wife, in restaurant the other day and she said to me ' Don't turn around, don't look now, but look lwho's just walked in'...!!!
On a serious note was their any difference in the price of P&M between Joyce's and Manse's??
Phil (Bermondsey Beat)
Hello Phil,
I can't remember if there was any difference in price, but I wouldn't have thought there would have been. The odd half penny or even ( unthinkable ) a hole penny would have made a big difference in peoples choice, there was even less money in peoples pockets then than there is now.
Rod.
Hi Kiwi,
Need to second that, my dad always took me to Joyce's and I loved it - best memories ever and best pie and mash from what I can recall. When I moved away from London it's the one thing I missed and for my birthday the family asked me where I wanted to go - you can guess my response. We ended up in Wandsworth Bridge Road one night at the Pie and Mash. I had double pie and mash and then the same again as I'd missed it so much. At that time nothing could have compared with it as I'd missed it so much.
I will have to take a trip down TBR and go to Manzes.
Does anyone remember the pie and mash shop in albion street opposite the cock and monkey, I think it was a Manzes but not too sure. I know it had an upstairs where kids wern,t allowed without an adult.

I may well be wrong-but the only Cock and Monkey p, h, that i know was in Neptune st, and opposite

You are correct with the 'Cock and Monkey" (above) being in Neptune Street opposite the old Rotherhithe assembly hall. There are still a few Manzes pie & mash shops around London, but the only two I know of in Bermondsey is the one still standing in Tower Bridge Road and the one that was in Southwark Park Road opposite the Blue Anchor' pub that was destroyed by enemy action in WW2.
In the back of my mind, I think I can recall talk of a P&M shop in Albion Street. I'll try and remember to ask my Dad as he will probably know.
Sorry about the wrong pub name it was,nt the cock and monkey but the pie shop was in Albion street and I have been told by a friend that it was Woods pie shop. Could the pub have been the Neptune?
Jim
yes there was a pie shop down the tunnel went in there often

When the Rotherhithe tunnel was built, the Neptune was left in Brunel Road. The two pubs below are in Albion Street (as possibly was the 'Battle of the Nile'):
The 'Albion' in April 2009:
The 'Little Crown' (had been boarded up for years):
Other pubs in Albion street were The Little Crown and The Albion
Phil
Thanks Phil it was the Albion I was trying to think of.
Jim
We have a good pie and mash shop in Eltham , Raymond's. He makes a decent pie and nice liquor and it's not a bad substitute when manzes I'd too far to travel.
I remember sawdust on the floors and Tommy Steel, I saw him in there a few times in my youth!
Hello Mordy1960
Have you tried Smiffy's on Well Hall Road, just down from the Tudor Barn?
To be honest I haven't had neither, but I know one day the temptation will be too much!!
Living in Eltham now, maybe I am scared of really liking Raymond's or Smiffy's and start swerving my beloved Manse's Tower Bridge Road
Phil.
Everyone seems to regard Manzes in Tower Bridge road as the best pie and mash shop in London but having eaten in most I think that the other Manzes in Deptford high street is better, but I suppose it's all about taste.

Having eaten Manze's (Tower Bridge Road) and Arment's with-in the same week recently, I would say that in my opinion Manze's pies are slightly smaller/less meat filling. Although their mash might be better, both pies and liquor are much better at Arment's.
