I remember my Nan giving me Bread and Dripping, especially on a cold day, it was great and all that fat must have kept us warm.
If i had a sore throat my Nan would give me a spoonfull of sugar soaked in vinegar, better than any medicine and it seemed to do the trick.
My Dad would tuck into Pigs Trotters, with grease running down his chin. I'm not sure if people still eat them now.?
I not sure about the Health issue, but it nether did us any harm.

Bread and dripping...that takes me back bermondseyboy.
My nan used to give us sugar sandwiches...it's a wonder we grew up with our own teeth! Lol.

Had a bit of a shock last night, watching the box and this add came on, and would you believe it they shot it in Manzes. It was an add for the Sunday Times, not the most appropriate place Manzes, being closed on Sunday. It's an odd feeling don't know weather to be annoyed, or slightly pleased or what.
Same thing when they used The Victoria in "Minder" although I grew to like that.

I've seen that ad a few times rodebdon...I recognised Manzes.
I think the guy in the ad was the actor, Rupert Everett.

I know what you mean when you say you don't know weather to be annoyed or slightly pleased.
I'm in two minds...pleased that Manzes is featured in an advert for a top quality newspaper and slightly miffed that maybe the upper classes see it as another working class establishment that's become trendy for them until the next novelty comes along!

My other half will be pleased. Seen the ad a few times but never the whole thing, my hubby keeps calling me when it comes on tv swearing blind it was Manzes (he visited for the 1st time ever this summer). I was dubious as I thought it was wishful thinking on his part. I'll have to tell him he was right (gawd 'elp me) blimey how weird, ad has come on tv as I am typing this. Don't think Manzes will suffer through invasion of upper crust clientelle tho' just making a bit of extra cash, and why not. Manzes also features in Elton Johns "Made in England" video if the 'nets to be beleived. Never seen it, would be interested if anyone has.
Never seen "Minder" episode with The Vic. (my dads regular haunt), is it worth tracking down?

Hi Dawn

There are only six episodes of the new Minder and if I remember rightly the exterior of the Vic pub features in more than one episode.
I was searching for some footage or pics of Shane Richie outside the Vic and this is the best I could find...a couple of pics of Shane filming Minder from a great site about the Vic called:

I'm sure your right Lesley, the exterior was in more than one episode. This one must have been filmed before the smoking ban, those Woodbines were really strong.
It's good that Manzes and the Victoria can make some money from these thing's Dawn, it should help to make sure they have a long future.
It was my Dad's Local as well, I have a beer in there from time to time, and can't help thinking about the old day's.The men would go out for the day in a charabanc, after loading the crates of  brown ale and light ale, they would through penny's out the window's for us children as they left.

I know it's not strictly related to this thread  but I'm sure the Pub at the start of the Football Factory film is the Alscot Arms in Willow walk.

Hello all,

It is Manse's, in its full unchanged glory. The marble tables and counter, wooden benches and the lift to bring the pies, liquer and mash up from the kichen downstairs. And what about the photos, some signed above the serving area? Roy Orbison, Dirty Den and numerous 'Eastenders' Danny Baker, Tommy Steele, and Victoria Beckham!! It has also been a location for a few music vids as well.

Hi Johnj

You must watch Tommy Steele and Things in the Video section of this site.
There you have it, the second best P&M shop down Tower Bridge Road, Joyce's..
Happy Memories.............

I was not going to enter this debate, but I feel with indignation, Two points on pie and mash Today and yester year.
(1) Has nobody noticed that pies today when you open them the meat is brown & cooked. In my younger day the meat was grey because it was boiled, thus we called it Brains.
(2) The potatoes are too clean as children we had to spend the first five minutes picking the eyes and bits out of them.
Sir I feel a letter should be sent to the Times. And that Pie & mash should now  be called Potatoes & Pie
Signed Ex Bermondsey Indignated (still great though)

Hi Dawn. You're right about Elton's video. You'll find it at YOUTUBE and Manze's appears about three minutes into the song (with a whole tray of yummy pies!)

Take it you don't eat at Arments, as their pies tend to be on the pink side of brown!

I thought the meat was lighter in colour back then because it was horse meat.
Anyway, it was all a case of simple economics. If you didn't hand over your School Dinner money but went to Manzes instead, you had enough left over for a doughnut from Edwards for afters and a semi frozen Jubbly on the way home after school.

Blimey i forgot about frozen jubbly's!
but then the summer was hot & lasted forever. There was always snow in the winter, especially 1963, and we had lots of bombed houses to play in - what else did we need, unless it was a better cart?

Hello all,

I've just returned from Manse's Tower Bridge Road. 2 pies, single mash!!!
I flipped my pie over so the salt and pepper can adhere itself to the liquer on the bottom of the pie.
A large group came in, about 35 of them ,they had P&M then went through the door on the right at the end of the shop. I'm sure that it was some form of a  tour of the world famous Manse's, Might even be something that the group could arrange??

Regards

Hi codiepops,
pie_and_mash is correct. See extract below from the 1995 Guide to Londoners Traditional Eating Houses, out of print and bit of a collectors item:
