Hi Rod

On the left is David Horton (your mate) on the right is my Brother Billy out side Harold Estate.
I don't think that dress fashion will ever come back?

Down Hopping.....L-R my Brother Billy, David Horton just behind him, Teddy Horton (The Dad)
Lottie Horton (The Mum) and Marion Horton (David's Sister)

Hi Bermondseyboy

Thank you for those pictures, its very strange not haveing seen the Horton's for about 54 years. David's Dad I recognise more than David. Marion looks like she may have popped down for the weekend in that very pretty dress.
I must have known you and your brother, but once I left Bermondsey I never went back for a long time, and lost touch with everybody I regret this very much.
As for the clothes, I think there great.

Rod.

Hi Rod

Your very welcome to the photo's.
And Marion always dressed nice wherever she went.
I dont think ive seen them for over 40 years myself.
The last time I saw David, he was digging on road works, many years ago.

My father John Lunney worked in Peak Freans when he first left school. Said he only wanted to work there to wear the big chef hat. He said once they switched the machines so the custard tart biscuits went the wrong way through the Bourbans or something. He was always telling me stories when I was a child to make me laugh. He did get the sack from there. He was bored and found in a bin a ball which he used as a football in the factory yard. He didnt know all the top men were looking out the window at him and he was called up and given his cards! My Uncle Frank learnt to drive a car by driving one of the Peak Frean vans in the yard. You didnt need to take a driving licence in those days. He practised until he could drive. He then became a lorry driver!

I worked at Peek Freans from 1960 until 1969 as a Baker. I don't recognise the ladies in the photo but then if the picture was bigger I might, They are working in the packing department in the old bakehouse. What they did looked easy but it wasn't. I tried it and failed. The factory played music most of the day and the packers used to work in time to the music.

Tea party for Bermondsey children evacuated to Worthing.

Description: For many children, wartime evacuation was a life-enhancing, mind-broadening experience, leaving them with memories they treasure to this day. Others, however, were beaten, mistreated and abused by families who did not want them and did not care about them. One post-war study of 450 ex-evacuees found that 12 per cent had suffered abuse of one form or another.

Hi Bermondseyboy,

Here is a recent picture of the Fleece on corner of Abbey Street & Neckanger:

However I think the car (Thunderbird?) is more likely parked outside the Red Cow, on the corner of The Grange/Grange Walk:

Hi Freddie

Thanks very much for photo's
Looking at the brickwork around the Red Cow and the brickwork on Vossy's picture does look similar.
I myself am not to familiar with these Pubs.
Perhaps Vossy could throw some light on this?
I was interested in the Thunderbird and the occasion?
Thanks again and keep them photo's coming.

Hi Freddie

thank you for posting the pics of The Red Cow and The Fleece.
My grandfather (my dad's dad) was friends with the landlord of The Red Cow and my mum and dad had their wedding reception in the ''Cow'' in August 1952.

I remember the Fleece very well as my grandmother (my dad's mum) lived opposite in Rufus House, Abbey Street.

Hi Bermondseyboy,

My Mum and all of her three sisters worked at Peak Freans at one time or another. My aunt Mary was ther most of her working life apart from the war when she worked in a munitions factory in the midlands. Her son Robert also worked ther in the engineering - maintenance department. He was envolved in dismanteling of the machines when P.F. was mouved to Liverpool and Leicester. The move was a blow to the workers in Bermondsey, this is typical of the behaviour of multi-nationals like Nabisco.
I was involved for a time in the filming of Spooks ( the T V drama ) it was based at the old factory and a lot of the interiors were filmed ther.

I seem to recognise the man on the left (with hat) as being Arthur Keeping who lived in Boyson Road, Walworth.  Does the name mean anything to you?

A while ago I posted a thread in the photo section asking if anyone had any photo's of Frean Street as the only photo's I have are ones taken in the back garden of our prefab.
I've seen pics of Frean Street before and after the prefabs but I would love to see a photo of the street and the prefabs from the front.

I've had a good ol' root through my family photo's and I'm posting four pics taken in our back garden. I don't know the exact dates they were taken but they were taken around the mid 1960's:

1. Me and my dad, Harry Longworth. The building behind dad is the Rising Sun pub which stood on the corner of Sun Passage and Old Jamaica Road.

2 & 3. Me in our garden.

4. Me and my aunt.

5. Tommy Steele in the garden of his old house in Frean Street. Judging by the railway arch and houses behind us it looks like Tommy's old house and our prefab were in roughly the same spot!

Hi Bermondseygal,
Try youtube "Tommy on the move" for good street views, also getty images has a few of Tommy Steele out front of his house and street views. I too have been looking for pics of Frean st as my mum lived opposite Tommy & his family until 1952 when she left home and I want to compile an album for her as she is almost 75.
Good luck, I'll let you know if I find anything else.
