I found this picture in my Dad's belongings after he died. Therefore all I know is that my Dad (third from the left, with his hand on his friend's shoulder), never really strayed from patronizing just the local pubs. He was born in 1912 in , when there were houses there and not apartment buildings. I'm guessing that he's about 25 years old in this photo, so it was pre-war. Also he was wounded by a rocket blast after landing for D-Day and then advancing into , and as a result had to wear glasses due to his head wounds, and he's not wearing them in this picture.
I have vague recollections of seeing the two gentlemen on the far left (standing), in my neighborhood when I was a kid, but I can't put a name to them. I posted the picture on Friends Reunited a couple of years ago, hoping to hear from someone that might recognize a family member or friend in the picture, but I haven't heard back from anyone about it.
The earliest recollection of a pub which my parents used that I can remember, was one they called the "White House", located either in or . That pub was demolished around 1950, but I know it was one of their favorites and may be where the beano was organized. I can remember how the men used to take a collection of pennies for the kids that went to see them off, and then they gave them to us as they left for the trip.
Other pubs that were still there when I left in 1968, and that they used as their "locals" were:
The Brighton ( and .)
The Bull (Old Kent Road and Great Dover Street)
The Black Horse Court (Law Street and Great Dover Street)
The Golden Fleece (Law Street)
The Duke of Wellington (Long Lane)
However, depending on his "thirst" my Dad would sometimes have to pop into the Kings Arms or the Bricklayers Arms, just to get re-hydrated on his way home from placing a bet with the local bookie.

Hi Bermondseyboy.
Is 57 in the same block as Mr Stacey's,trying to work out where it is from the picture. If it's where I think my freind (who's Dad drove the van for Cadbury's) lived at the other end of the landing'I can't remember his name.Just wonderd if you knew the Family, the last time I saw him would have been about 1956.
Rod.
Hi Rod
Yes we lived on the top balcony No. 57, underneath us were the Buttons Family and underneath them on the ground floor was Joe Stacey (Caretaker).
At the other end of our Balcony were, Teddy Horton (Dad) Lottie Horton (Mum) Marion Horton (Daughter) and David Horton (Son) who you proberly knew. He would be about your age now.
Bermondseyboy.
Hi Vossy
What a great picture of your Nan, it seems that there was a special occassion going on.
I love that Car, would be worth a fotune now, I think it's a 1955 Ford Thunderbird?
I have been trying to get a Photo of the Fleece but as yet no luck.
Bermondseyboy
Hi Bermondseyboy,
Thank you very much, David Horton- that's right now I remember it. A few of us used to go to the Pilgrim Fathers a small boys club attached to The Quakers. We all went to Sufolk one year and camped under bell tents,we had a great time.
A cricket match was arranged against H.M.S. Gangese. We were completely outclassed being much younger than them and they were very fit Navy Cadets. When it was our turn to field ( us having scored about 19 run's ) one of the cadets batsmen skyed the ball it went about a mile in the air and to our horror was heading straight down to David. Him not being great in concentration was blissfully unaware.
It hit him smack on the top of his head, this would have killed most boys but I think he must have had a particularly thick skull. He just buckled at the knees slightly and just carried on.
I suspect he still has a mark on the spot.
Rod.
