Hi there,

Spa Bakery has been in  that position since at least the 1960s.  I used to go in there when I first started work at the Council in 1962.  I think the shop you are referring to was across the road if my memory serves me right.

Bermondseyboy, your post on 13 Jan 2010 of Wolseley Buildings and a plan of 1884 has "London" crossed out (as In London Road) and "Wosleley" written below it.  I know that the road was called London Road, and have identified it on old maps (my great great grandparents lived there, for their sins).  Terrible place early to late 19th century, until the old 17th century cottages were demolished, a place of death and disease.  So the plan in your pic suggests the name was changed in 1884, which is useful to know.

Hi Kathy

Your correct, Worseley Street and surrounding area in the late 19th century was very poor and with diseases like Cholera 1849-50.
I cannot imagine living in those conditions.
I'm not sure if that is the exact date, that London Road became Worseley Road, but it must be close.

There is some History from Charles Booth, may be of interest.
(After you click the link above, scroll down to Charles Booth and Jacob's Island.)

Steve.

Named London Street in the OS maps for both 1872 & 1894. Wolseley Street in the 1914 edition

Hi bermondseyboy and Freddie, thanks for your replies.  There's also a fascinating page by Howard Somerville about Jacobs Island, including maps and pictures.  http://www.hsomerville.com/meccano/Articles/JacobsIsland.htm  Of course, the Ship Aground pictures I put in the Yesterday and Today thread are relevant.  In this page, although Howard doesn't name the correspondent, there is a large amount of text in blue, starting next to the map image captioned "Fig 5 Ship a Ground, 1813" - this is taken from Henry Mayhew's notebooks, the social reformer.  If you have the stomach to read it, it is horrific.  Jacobs Island nowadays would appear to be quite sought after for living, and the Dickens estate looks to be a pleasant place.

Straying into Walworth, some pictures relating to the photo of Gurney Street (all the way back on page two).

My parents lived on this street in the early Sixties – hard to think these houses were knocked down for the Heygate Estate. Apparently all the blocks of housing between Manor Place, Thrush Street and Amelia Street were demolished. One side of Amelia St remains.
1.        Bomb-damaged buildings, Gurney Street - from a delayed action parachute bomb
2.        Bomb-damaged buildings, Gurney Street
3.        Pollock Road 1964 - Gurney St. is the next turning
4.       Thrush St demolished
5.       Thrush St demolished
6.       The Heygate in 1972
7.    Amelia Street demolished

Some of these come from an excellent collection of local photos on this Facebook thread; -http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=45766468935

A great picture sent in by Bermondseybeat showing what we think is Tower Bridge Road 1940 ish.
It seems like Manze's was spared (Thank God).
Working from the left hand side, i think the shop on the corner of Rothsay Street could be Rossi's, an ice cream shop? working down from there i'm at a lose until we reach Manze's.
Can anybody shed some light - one for Fosney maybe.
Also was Edwards the donought shop there then and was it damaged?

I am sure the shop next to Rossi's Ice Cream Parlour was Youngs the Grocery Store when I was a child I used to love watching them cut the cheese with a wire and put the butter in packs with the wooden butter pat the shop had marble counters and floors

Oh there is a name from the past - when we moved out to Orpington, Joe Capuccio used to come round with a horse and cart with fruit and veg.  Id forgotten all about it til I read that name.  I expect it was probably one of the sons as he must have only been in his 40s in the 1950s/60s.  Very nice man, dark, well built and wore glasses.

I think you will find that it was Joe's brother Pascal (I used to work for him when he had a shop in Lynton Rd I was 13 at the time) who had the fruit and veg round, he was the one who wore glasses. Not sure that he used a horse and cart though,I always thought that he had a van.
Joe was a little smaller and rounder! As I remember he always wore a flat cap.His son's name was Alfie.

You got there before me Joe, I also remember the cheese cutting and particularly the butter patting.
I remember seeing Youngs still being there about 10 years or so ago. I wonder if they manged to sell the place that was up for sale, it bit of haggling over the price of that I should think.
