I must say Bermondsey boy Great pics. The Rankin Bros Cork factory was situated in Bermondsey Square where the market is or was should I say, I was told it received a direct hit during the Blitz WW2, I lived at 2 Bermondsey Square from 1947-1952 i was seven when we moved. I was told by my father that just after they moved in the chimney started smoking badly and caught fire, the fire service were called to put put the fire, whenn my parents had the chimney swept a load of corks were found.[image]

Arundel Buildings Grange Road College
(back to list) Hi Bermondsey Boy As possibly an older Bermondsey Boy,When I went to what you call Grange School. It was officially called Webb Street Primary School, And as I say with fake indignation Grange Road college was for over two hundred years upto 1961, was the original Bacon School the bust over the entrance had a date on it 1703. Now be told lol, But seriously good pics all the way though the site. Rick

Hi rstupple2
Thats a great picture, I have vague memories of I believe Mrs Marks throwing a broom out of the window above the shop. The newsagents moved to the line of shops in the middle of Abbey St. To the left of the building was a bomb site that we used to have a big bomfire on firework night.
Tom
thanks Tom do you remember the greengrocers that was just around the side of the Newsagents/ RickHi rstupple2

I can only think it must have been Joe Capuccio who also moved to the row of shops.
Thinking about the Fleece I can remember the winkle stall outside.

Can you remember his sons name as I used to help him clear up around the shop on a Saturday afternoon.
Tom
Hi Bermondseyboy I have just been scrolling through this site and saw the picture of John Bull Arch (post date 7 Feb) and it brought back the memory of my dad when the first rocket bomb hit as on the corner of Drummond Road and Southwark Park Road where the petrol station is now was a cafe where my Dad was having his lunch when the bomb hit and he was buried under the cafe, he managed to dig himself free and stagger home to let my Mum and me that he was alright but unfortunately when I answered the door to him I didnt recognise him being covered in dust and debris and run indoors, So once again thank you for this brilliant site it certainly brings back a lot memories good and bad.

Hi Paperboy
The pic of Linsey Street c1963 posted by you on 18 November 2009 do you know any of its history or who took it as I have asked family members to verify it and we are all agreed that the lady in the pic is my Mum and 1 of the children (in the white dress) is my daughter who would have been 2 years of age in 1963. Would just like to thank you for a wonderful surprise as my Mum died in 2005.

Oh there is a name from the past - when we moved out to Orpington, Joe Capuccio used to come round with a horse and cart with fruit and veg. Id forgotten all about it til I read that name. I expect it was probably one of the sons as he must have only been in his 40s in the 1950s/60s. Very nice man, dark, well built and wore glasses.
I'm not sure if anyone's posted a link to Skyscrapercity, but it's a great site for threads on photographs of London - including Bermondsey and surrounding areas.

This is a picture of my Grandfather's shop in 1960 'Hickey's Radio Service'. It was based at 87 Spa Road, Bermondsey. I have another picture and I'm trying to work out if it is the same building. It appears to now be named 'Spa Bakery' but the address is listed as 86 Spa Road. Can anyone add any confirmation?
Hi teddyp, knowing your family your Grandfather, Father and uncle as I said before I lived on the Neckinger Est. It is a different shop, the Bakery is still there, your grandfather's shop was on the other side of the road, after your grandfather left it became a tailors. The last time I was up there which is 4yrs ago it was the Neckinger Est tenents association.

Was the Tailors shop called 'Sam Hendersons'?
Phil (Bermondsey Beat)
Hi Phil, Thats right had a couple of suits made there. I now work in films about ten years ago on a filmset I was talking to a young guy. When I said I was bought up in Bermondsey he said that his dad who was now dead had a tailor shop in Bermondsey it turned out to be the same shop Sammy Henderson. Sammy was from Northen Ireland he told me he started tailoring by making police uniforms for the RUC.Was the Tailors shop called 'Sam Hendersons'?
