Tubby Isaacs - Photo from Pie and Mash Thanks.
I Remember when my Mum and Dad would be drinking in the Pagoda and at chucking out time
would all jump in there cars, those that had one and head of to Tubby Isaacs or Barney's,
Aldgate for some Eels or cockles etc.
Of Course the drivers were sober, not a drop passed there lips???
I can remember going to Tubby Isaacs in Aldgate with my Mum and Dad. I didn't like the eels so me and my brother used to have a bowl of jelly with the vinegar on and a big chunk of crusty bread. Yuk!

Hi
My nan and grandad used to live in Devon Mansion's. They moved there in the early 1970s after moving from Abbey Building until they moved to Northampton in 1980. I remember them well. My nan and grandad lived in block one I think, The block with the park at the back of it where me and my brother used to play every week. My nans flat was on the first floor next to the lift. I can still see the lay out of the flat.
Hi,
I was born in Guys in March 1968, my mum and dad rented their first house in Strathnairn Street where I lived their until 1970 before moving to Abbey Building on Abbey St.
I don't remember the house but I do remember the in door market opp. the pie and mash shop just before the park. There was a garage on a road between the park and the indoor market.
Do you remember Taylors coaches, the aquatic shop and Daves barbers shop on the left as you made your way to the Blue from grange road?
My mother ran the diploma laundry and bagwash shop on St James Road.
I think the sweet shop/fishing tackle shop opposite on Straithnairn St was called Allchornes.
She worked there approx 1962 until early 70s i think.I used to deliver the bagwash to peoples houses on an old pram chassis for 3d or sometimes a tanner if i was lucky.I think the main laundry was Peckham and the van came daily to collect the dirties and bring the laundered bags.I remember my mum getting the driver to take me and my mate to Peckham with him in the back of the lorry, hanging out the back waving so we could go pictures-no health and safety those days!
I also remember the dairy (Davis?)on the right going up towards Paterson Park. Used to get a mousse in an individual pack from the freezer there.Push it out the top to eat it.
Clyde Buildings in Pages Walk just before their demolition in the mid 70s?

Route 36 tram [21] at Bricklayers Arms/Old Kent Road junction. The area is now the Bricklayers Arms flyover. The tram is entering the Bricklayers arms junction from the The building on the right is the Old Kent Picture house (the billboards for "Coming Attractions" can just be seen) and the white building behind the tram is the Globe Pub. All these buildings have now gone.
I found this picture and as the text above states that the white building behind the tram was the Globe Pub? I have never known it as a Pub only a Cinema, can anyone confirm this?-bermondseyboy
As far back as I can remember it was a Cinema. My dad Arthur Noble had stalls selling fruit and veg in Aberdour St. In those days people took fruit and peanuts into the pictures.
as anyone got any old photos of creasy estate aberdour street
Georges fish shop. That brings back memories,we used to go there and ask "Got any crackling mister" you used to get it for free. Anyone remember Neptunes Fish Bar at the Elephant ?
I would like to contact anyone with a knowledge of the the history of Bermondsey, especially St. Mary Magdalen parish. Looking for Wrights, Gooms and Fullers who populated the area quite densely in the Victorian era and earlier, may be as early as the mid 1600's. My family lived on Page's Walk before they all died or moved to Fulham in the mid 1800's. Prior to that they were bricklayers, glue makers tanners and the like. I suspect they lived in Bermondsey for many generations. You can e-mail me at biggs9@rocketmail.com.
I went to Bacon's School in Grange Road 1956-60 when I first went there used to get a shilling 12 old pence for lunch, used to go to Manzies for a six penny bowl of liquer & Mash. Then on to Edwards for six penny doughnuts> Great Lunch[image]
