Photo's of Bermondsey (Buildings)
My first date with my husband was in the Apples & Pears on the Bonamy Est load music killed the art on conversation but in those days we thought it was great. My husband lived in No 1 Marwood way! his dad lived there until the the estate was knocked down. He now lives on the new estate.
What a small world, Bonamy Estate, Starkleigh Way was the first place me and my wife got after we were married.
We lived with her mum and dad at first at Alscot Road, then moved to Bonamy, our first place on our own about early 70's
After our first Daughter was born we moved to Barkis Way.
My Aunt and Uncle lived in Meltham Way.
The picture of the Old Kent Road in 1950 brought back a strange memory for me. I was at Bacon's in Pages' Walk from 1962-1967. During my early period there the school had no kitchens and we had to walk in crocodile fashion to the nearest kitchens which supplied school dinners which were in the Deaf and Dumb School. I believe the D&D school was in Townsend Street and we crossed the busy Old kent Road by means of that crossing, every day. Didn't like the dinners much, though.
This is such a small world Bermondsey Boy! our paths must have crossed. In the late 60`s i had friends living in Alscot Rd their name was Bushby! I wonder did your wife or her mum know them! the only reason is that they were a very large family i think about 9 children, they were a pretty poor family their mum used to take in home work, there were many times when i was there, we used to put letters in envelopes for her, she used to do thousands.
Hi Sheila,
This is getting more and more weird as it goes on.
Not only do we know the Bushby's but Tommy Bushby is Married to my Wife's older Sister and has been for the last 20 odd years.
Any more surprises?
My Wifes Family lived at No.125 Alscot Road, named Dickinson.
It was there that when the houses were due for demolition were were housed on the Bonamy.
I think your Correct, our paths must have crossed somewhere.
Just one more thing bermondsey boy! Tommy Bushby`s first wife was my husbands sisters husbands niece!! Lyn Sullivan her name was, i went to Fair Street Primery School with her.
Loving the photo`s and the memories their stiring up thanks again Sheila52

Photo showing in 1902 with obelisks erected for Edward VII coronation. The photo also shows the underground gents convenience which stood in . Also many landmarks including SHIP public house and HORSESHOE public house which was severely damaged by the blast of the V2 rocket that devastated the London Sessions in 1944."
I remember these gates so well ,that telephone kiosk was one of the much missed redboxes, use to phone my girlfriend from there ,tuppence would go along way on a call back then .
I lived across the road next door to Samuel Taylors garage and lorry yard ,my dad WallyMills was a mechanic there for many years, from just after the end of the war ,there were two houses next door(172&173)they had a porch with large pillars .
On oneside of the gates was the swimming and public baths ,on the other the post office and ashop that other people have remembered as being a ,dry cleaners a cafe and grociers
The shop next to the post office which I remember as a dry cleaners outside the Alaska building main gate was the dry cleaners in 1950 and was run by the two brothers who owned the tailors shop by the Spa Road bus stop next door was a paper shop and I believe a pub on the corner and further down on the right hand side was Heinke who where something to do with diving suits there was a diving helmet outside the factory which was next to the church
