My Dad and his family all grew up in Bermondsey - they lived in Whites Grounds.  Does anybody remember the APPS family - my Dad is called George - his parents were Fred and Beatrice Apps.

This is a great site Bermondseyboy.smile

Does anyone remember the Owens and/or Longworth families from Bermondsey?
The Owens's lived in Dix's Place and the Longworth's lived in Paulin Street.
My mum's family we're the Owens's and my dad's family were the Longworth's.
My dad Harry was born in 1918 and was a stevedor at Butler's Wharf and my mum Marie was born in 1920 and was a leather worker at Bickle's in Bermondsey Street.
When I was born in 1958 we lived in Devon Mansions in Tooley Street and in 1963, when I was five years old, we moved to a new prefab in Frean Street where we lived until 1970.

Just to add a bit more went up to Bermondsey with Claire and Fred and took them to Peter Butler House to see there old flat.  The next door neighbour invited us in for a cup of tea (Flo and Ron at number 23) and it really made the day we all had a great time.
We then went to Village East in Bermondsey Street for something to eat right next to the church that they got married in.

although i was out of deptford and not bermondsey my grandfather and his family were, there name was tucker my grandfather was george he had 2 brothers alf and joe and 4 sisters lil, florrie, nora, and clara
as far as i am aware only florrie and lil, are alive my grandfather died in 1977 i was always told by all the family that they lived in the same flats as the bygreaves family and in fact my grandfather and his older brother alf would take max out in his pram,i also became friends many years ago with a family from the same flats with the surname robbins who in fact remembered my grandfather and his family and confirmed this
and to put the icing on the cake i did in fact meet max bygreaves mum who at the time was staying with her daughter in greenwich where i live about 27/8 years ago her rmemory was as sharp as ever and she also remembered the tuckers and robbins family.
i know obviously its a long shot but would anybody remember them i know when the family moved from bermondsey most of them were deptford located other than clara who lived in mottingham my grandfather and his brother alf were dockers and his brother joe was a farrier who was located behind the catholic church in deptford high street my grandfather also was the founder of the st joseph boxing club with his uncle jack pearson

My father in law is Fred Conroy who used to belong to the Oxford and Bermondsey Boys club, used to love boxing there.  Do you remember him he is 82 now so might have been there when you used to go there.  He married Claire Hook who came from abbey street, they moved to peter butler house when it was first build.  They now live in berkshire

Hi there!

Thanks for replying.

Jimmy Longworth was my uncle (my dad's younger brother) he died in 1987 aged 63.
You're right, Jimmy used to box.
All my family on the Longworth side are sadly gone so there's none left to ask but I expect they
would've known Rose and also Fred and Clare as my nan (dad's mum) lived in Abbey Street.
My grandfather, Harry Longworth, my dad, also Harry Longworth and Jimmy were all dockers and
worked at Butler's Wharf in Shad Thames.

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me.  I asked my father inlaw but he can't remember your dad or the rest of the family.. Just Jimmy i think it was because they both loved boxing.  Its a shame that there is no one left on that side of your family.  Nice speaking to you

Hi,

I am researching my family tree as most of my mothers family were born and bred in Bermondsey. I have been tracing things back and it appears that most of ancestors on my mother's side have worked as mariners, curriers, dressmakers, lightermen, hoopmakers, leather makers etc etc in the area.

I am waiting for my mother to fill in some of the details but I know her Grandfather Charles Mulley, lived at 143 Drummond Road and many of the other Mulley's used to live on East Lane.

My mother is a Maynard and grew up in the late 1940's and early 1950's in Bermondsey with her younger brothers Harry and Eddie. She once told me she dated Martin Hicks who was Tommy Steele's brother. Apparently Tommy changed his name. Once all the building work started in the area the family moved to Stevenage in Herts where I was born. My grandparents were Harry and Vera Maynard and they used to tell me lot's of stories about sing-songs in the local pubs.

Be nice to know if anyone remembers the Maynards, Mulleys or Jarmyns.

Hi Bermondseygirl

Wee Willy Harris was certainly a colourful character all right, there were a few like him around Bermondsey.
As for the Working mens club in albany road, we used the top floor for our Judo Club, The Tokei.
We would stay after our training for a few drinks and had automatic membership, but we didn't really use it as a social club that much.
We did get a few British Olympic stars in there, ie Dave Starbrook, Olympic silver medalist and Brian Jacks.

What a fantastic place this forum is. I lived in Harold Estate from birth 1965 until 1976. I now live in Suffolk and have just spent a few hours travelling down memory lane. Baldwins in Walworth road supplied the sarsparilla (still going today you can put in postal orders to them now). Have so many memories i don't know where to start. I think i may be a fair bit younger than some members but i still did the same things as a kid. Top of Clyde buildings, swing park in leroy st Pie & Mash (Joyces for us, crust down loadsa liquor and vinegar). Anyone remember Shuttleworths chocolate factory? my mum worked there before i was born. loads of industry around Bermondsey years ago, factories everywhere they've now all gone or been turned into luxury apartments - tragic. Is it true that Paragon has been turned into flats?
Thanks for brill photos of Harold est, can just make out our flat. where did all the greenery come from? the square used to be concrete and washing lines.

Hi Jimmika
Have been looking on the internet about the film you were asking about. There was a film called The Boy and the Bridge. There is an article about it on the internet. It says the film was made in the East End of London. However, cant find where you could get a copy of the DVD from.
I thought Amazon might have a copy.
