I have some great memories of Bermondsey, although I wasnt born there, my family was. And for me growing up I spent alot of time there with my Grandparents. Manze's pie and mash was the family favorite. The surrounding area's, markets and parks. would love to see pic's of the area as it was back then, about 20 yrs ago.

Hi Rod

What a great storey, it seems you lived an almost identical life in Bermondsey as I did.
Visiting the same Haunts like Manze pie and Mash, the best in London and Those Donuts in Edwards.
And the Victoria Pub, I did drink in there a few time when my Nan lived in Guinness Buildings.
But as you say it's all changed now, for the worst I feel, just the Memories left of an exciting childhood.
I also went to Webb street School, but after leaving went to Paragon.
Although your name does ring a bell, as does Peter Feddon and I do remember Jimmy Rolf.
It seems that you are a little older than me, but my Brother, Billy Rogers is around about your age and I will ask him if he remembers any of your names, I sure he will.
Anyway Thanks for your storey and I look forward to hearing more from you.
As you can see we need more Members, I am working on it.

Hi Kentlass

Liked your storey, yes they were good times back then, but we had our problems as well.
Your've  proberley got it a little bit easier now with technology the way it's gone, but the pressure on the young to earn a living seems daunting.?
The market you were refering to where you had your Sarsaparilla, was East Lane i would imagine.
We used to go most Sunday mornings, and the Sarsaparilla was very welcoming on cold day's.

Thank you for your comments, it's really good to hear about other people's experiances,it brings back memories.I miss Bermondsey very much and sometimes daydream about liveing there again but of course it would be a mistake, times and people have changed.I have tried to leave something on the forom, but there seems to be glitch,on the bottom left there's a required field Which dosn't work.I wonder if this is just me.

All The Best Rod.

Hi Kentlass

The Bermondseyboy has beaton me to it  about East Lane,  (you have to be quick to beat a Bermondsey boy)  .It is suposed to be one of Londons oldest Markets if not the oldest. The last time I went, which was a few years ago, they still sold Sarsaparilla I have also seen it for sale in pie and mash shops. When I went there as a child, (to show you how long ago it was),there were Tie's with pictures of the Beverly Sisters on them for sale. They were big stars then, this would be in the early 50's.I shall try to up load an early picture of the Market.

 Best Wishes Rod.

Hi Rod, Bermondsey, thank you both

I think a trip to Manze's is a must very soon, not just to have the best pie and mash around but to pick up a bottle of sarsaparilla. I wonder if my children will like it as much as i did?

Hi Rod

Refering to the glitch you had, if you could let me know what you were trying to add and where,
ie. Members short stories, Photo's, Video, or General Discussion, I will do my best to solve the problem.

There is a Picture of East Lane Market added on your reply in General Discussion's which brings back a flood of memories, thanks.

As you may have noticed I'm still trying to find my way around this site to make it as easy as possible to navigate, so i do expect teething troubles, and only to happy to hear of any suggestions of how to make it better and any problems that occur.

And now i'm going back to viewing your picture and think of all the good times me and my Dad had walking down there on a cold Sunday morning, a plate of cockles and a sarsaparilla.

Cheers

Hi Bermondseyboy,
thanks for your responce.I clicked on Forum then start new topic and entered my topic, then pressed Submit Topic. Against the Catergary on the bottom left the message requird field came up,pressing this rather than fields an empty verticle box came up,pressing this has no effect thats wher I got stuck.I shall enter my topic somewher else.

Re that great picture of the boys in Pages Walk (I think it was taken in about 1914)I don't recognise any of the Lads but those clothes were just like the ones we wore in the 40s and 50s fashions didn't change much then, they could well be the very same nothing was thrown away then just handed down.

I remember the skooter's and collecting the crown top's from pubs and nailing them on the front. They thougt they looked very smart.

     All the Best Rod.

You either Love it or Hate it, Some people ask, what is it? and some ask how do you make it?
Well I'm talking about Liquor, that lovely stuff they pour over your pie and mash.
Not to thick and Not to thin, Manze got it dead right bless'em.
So if you fancy your chances in making your own, here goes!

For Pie & Mash

Ingredients Parsley Liquor

25 Gram Butter (1 oz)
25 Gram Plain flour (1 oz)
300 ml Water (10 fl oz)
4 Tablespoon Chopped fresh parsley
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 Teaspoon Malt vinegar, optional

How to make Parsley Liquor

  • Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  • Gradually add the water or stock. Bring to the boil, stirring continuously. Add the parsley and seasoning and vinegar if using.

Note:

You can use chicken stock to make your Parsley Liquor in place of the water

Serves 4

I myself have never made it, and take no responsabilty for the outcome, but if anyone does attempt it, please please let me know how it turns out.

HAVALOCK ARMS

The Havalock Arms, Fort Road.
We started a Judo Club here called the TOKEI it was sponsered by Courage's.
Many of the kids from Longfield Estate and surrounding area became members.
We moved from here to a working mans club down Albany Road, from there to Tower Bridge.

Does anyone remember this, maybe you was a member.

Does anyone remember the Claremont, Dunton Road back in 1969/1970.
It was run by Arthur, his Brother Bob and Sister Vera?
Arthur had a patch over one eye.
Do you know what happened to them, did they retire and move.

Hi Sheila52

I have just found a reference to my Grandad who apparently lived at No.29 Alice Street.
I think he was a bit of a dark horse of the family, not much was said about him, not even my Nan mentioned him much. He died at No.48a Lower Road. My Nan moved to Guinness Buildings, Pages Walk.
I noticed by your blogg that your farther was born there, I wonder if they ever met?
The pub on the corner of Alice Street was indeed the Jolly Tanners, and the other pub you mentioned the Hop Pole was in Rephidim Street.
Unfortunatly I cannot find any photo's of this pub.
